CLC Goals in Montreal and with all the Canadian Francophone Community
Related to this project: Creating Local Connections Canada/Liaisons locales Canada

Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

Hello everyone !

Hope my message finds you well !

We had a great meeting today with Sessi and Kimia discussing about the most interesting partnerships for TIG and CLC, what we've realized and what needs to be done ...

Ilyes, Kimia and I have decided of the following goals for our next 2 months:

1- Make sure that we partner with at least 2 organizations (one of them will be our host for year 3): serious and strong partnerships (offline and online engagement: establish themselves as networks on TIG).

2- Increase the Francophone membership especially in the Province of Quebec through working with partners, newsletters, webinars and workshops ...

3- Plan a detailed strategy for year 3 (by the end of June)

4- OUTREACH:
* 5-7 workshops (Yassir) in Dawson Community Center in Verdun, Ilyes can be cofacilitating these workshops with me
* Participate to events in Montreal
* Try to organize one workshop in a high-school in Montreal, I am thinking of Rosemount's High-school.
* Al Gore's Presentations: seize the opportunity to present TakingITGlobal especially its resources on Climate Change.

Cheers,
Yassir

My visit to Dawson Community Center in Montreal
Related to this project: Creating Local Connections Canada/Liaisons locales Canada

Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

Hello CLC Crew,

I have just come from the Dawson Community Center in Montreal (Verdun), it took me one hour and a half to be there, but the meeting was exciting and very enriching !!

I met with three of their staff members: Lisa Olmstead, Rachel Levine-Katz (their Intervention Specialist who will be working directly with me) and Heidy Wager, Program Coordinator.

Actually, I introduced TakingITGlobal and CLC Canada to them, they were interested especially by the workshops and the Guides to Action, so we discussed about the workshops since I can facilitate them with participants from 12 to 17 (teeanagers), the workshops will last from 30 minutes to one hour, we established a minimum of 5 or 6 people to do a workshop and a maximum of 20 participants.

The Dawson Community Center possesses many rooms for varied activities: a games room, an arts room, a gym, two kitchens, a multi-purpose room and other rooms for meetings. They have also a tech-room: it contains ten high-tech computers that I will use while doing my workshops on 5 different subjects:
1- Climate Change
2- Change That Clicks
3- MDGs (Millenium Development Goals)
4- HIV / AIDS
5- Children's Rights

After a discussion that lasts about 30 minutes, we came out with important ideas:
I will start doing the workshops from May 2nd, I will have five to seven weeks (Friday from 6-7) to do my wokshops, so I am going to be pretty busy during May :) I gave Rachel some promotional material that she can distribute to the teens who are interested in participating to the workshops, I suggested also to registrate them in the TIG website before the workshops, so they can familiarize themselves a bit with the TIG tools. And, we'll buy snacks for the workshops because it is important to keep the teens motivated and active, so they need something to eat :)

It sounds good ! The meeting was interesting for both TakingITGlobal and Dawson Community Center ! Hourra !!

Collaboration sp? do ale

the climatic changes constitute extraordinary D? for the humanit? In front of the extent of T? can E, one feel impotent, D? S? rear the rapidit? be transformations in progress, to doubt and wonder whether our individual actions will be able to make the diff? NCE.

The R? nse is however? cog: yes, absolutely! It is by the sum of our gestures that us R? will sirons? nstaurer of new values. By adopting new spending patterns, we will influence the production and will contribute? m? orer our qualit? E life. A gesture? time has. There are thousand and one F? S of rem? er? has climatic crisis. The important thing, it is of not D? urager, of amndt? orer its assessment? rg? what daily and of R? anger its print? logic.

Here some suggestions, Pr? NT? in five large HT? S easy? to etenir.

1. R? let us isons our transport

- Support public transport, walk, the v? , the covoiturage. . In R? issuant your transport of about thirty kilom? be per week, you? will nomiserez until? 00 kg of CO2 in one year? If 100.000 drivers qu? cois engaged, tomorrow morning? ppliquer this simple R? E, the qu? C? nomiserait 50.000 tons of CO2 annually!

- M? gez your transport by decreasing your speed, by maintaining your v well? cule and, if you must absolutely change your car, by supporting small the cylindr?. If your D? acements is especially urban, choose a hybrid car.

2. Let us consume better and throw little!

- The R? E of the three R: R? anger, R? iliser and to recycle. And do you remember that best F? R? anger, it is still to less consume. Buy durable products, R? rez the articles D? ctueux and give what you do not use any more? 'other people who will make good use of it.

-? itez the suremballage, recycle more and practise composting. You will be surprised to see how these simple daily practices will decrease by F? spectacular your production of D? ets.

- Consume local products, encourage the biological culture and give up famous the small plastic water bottles while choosing liked? our a gourd R? ilisable.

3. ? let us onomisons it? rgie, it is paying!

- Am? will orez the insulation of your house and install thermostats? ctronic which will allow you R? er temp? ture of your pi? S according to your use R? .

- If you must replace? ctrom? gers, choose apparatuses of the EnergyStar type. Pay also a particuli attention? ? otre water-heater, which consumes much of? rgie.

- Choose one? airage more effective (the bulbs fluocompactes exempts the m? lumi? for 75% less? rgie) and do not forget only your T? sights, computers and other apparatuses? ctronic continue to consume? rgie m? when they are not Al? Only F? to make sure that they you Co? is T nothing when they at rest, it is still of D? ancher.

4. Let us respect our resources, it is our H? tage!

- Air, water, ground and the for? are our resources. Let us learn? be to respect! Prot? R our water, it? nomiser, in? E proud the propri? anger and knowledge to divide it. To cultivate the ground with respect, prot? R our for? , and to engage?? anger the air pollution which we breathe. Voil? E simple combat with the daily newspaper which guarantee? ous citizens better a qualit? E life.

5. Let us become agents of change!

- The sum of the small individual actions can become a wind of change which will influence the future policies. Make conna? E your opinions, do you express and support the producers who act of mani? person in charge in mati? of environment.

- Encourage it? cation of the young people! They are the hope of tomorrow, and we have the duty of good Pr? the RER to face large D? S of the future. It is them, the agents of change.

Take this list and transform it!

Adapt it? bone needs. Add your own suggestions, cross out the id? who seem to you most absurd, encircle your Pr? R? , stick the list to the ceiling of your room if that sings you, but, especially, insufflate a wind of change around you!

Is the author a biologist, photographer and cin? you. It has? chief of three missions? ord of the sailing ship Sedna IV, of which more R? nte in the Antarctic.

EXCITING MONTH OF MARCH WITH CLC
Related to this project: Creating Local Connections Canada/Liaisons locales Canada

Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

Salut chers membres de l'équipe de CLC,

For the very first time, I will post a blog describing what I did in the last month in both French and English, wow !! :) it is a sort of "cocktail" :)

For my offline engagement, I respected my goals:
- Meet Vanessa and Stephan from Alternatives (a follow-up about our partnership)
- Contact Canada World Youth and Communautique by email and by phone to plan meetings. Actually, I will have more facility to plan partnerships and realize them (at least I hope) because I participated to the Al Gore's Training on Climate Change, there were 270 participants including the Staff, so I had the opportunity to discuss with leaders of environmental groups and organizations in Montreal such as Écosphère, Le jour de la Terre, Mont-Mégantique (it is not an organization but an astronomy place for visit) and I met also the director of CTV, she is fantastic and she will give me the email of the Montreal Coordinator for CTV, I think reaching media to promote what I am doing in Montreal will help me a lot, ... promoting TIG and CLC gives us a lot of popularity, credibility and good reputation.

- Organise an open forum in my cegep: “Table ronde” in order to promote TIG and CLC Canada to youth in my school and in my community. Even if there weren't many participants, the Open Forum went very well (See photos; QUEBEC CLC Team), I know that the quality of "my" photos isn't perfect !

- Promote the open forum: posters everywhere in the cegep.

I forgot to say that I've been very active on the TIG Platform, a community that I am passionate about.

All the best,
Yassir

Do hello dear members of TakingITGlobal,

I let to you read an article which appeared in the press montr? ease and which I do find int? its:

(D? UT OF the ARTICLE OF PRESS)
Voil? E which distinguishes Al Gore from the others? logists. Its conf? NCE, which it does have livr? yesterday? ontr? , int? as much the taxi driver zimbabw? , in its remote contr? that the head of undertaking in his haughty steel tower.

Do David Suzuki and Steven Guilbeault enjoy large Cr in vain? bilit? their conf? nces is usually held in conquered ground, of convinced in front. Their notori? limits itself moreover? uelques surrounding countries, at best.

On the other hand, the influence of Al Gore, D? ? rme before it does not obtain the Nobel Prize, reached proportions ever seen in the field of the environment. The more so as it touches Pr? S? NT those which it is important to convince, classes leading and political.

Is that confirm? golds of the visit of Al Gore? remblant, in 2006. Then with the Palate of the congr? of Montr? , in 2007. And finally, with even more acuit? at the time of the conf? does NCE what it have gift? yesterday evening? place of Arts has? 'invitation of the Press.

Several chiefs of political parties of the qu? C? ient Pr? nts, of m? what the mayor of Montr? , the chief of Block qu? cois and highest leaders of the Circus of the Sun, Lotto-qu? C, of Juste to laugh, the national Bank, the Desjardins Movement, Domtar, Hydro-qu? C, of the Canadian, Spectra, etc

Why gratin? nomic and political is D? ac? U large complete? Why does it look at Al Gore with such an amount of admiration? And especially, why does it have him R? rv? such ovation yesterday evening? room Wilfrid-Furrier has? Because Al Gore is one as of his, quite simply.

We urge individuals to inform yourselves and to take the actions necessary in your homes, businesses and communities to reduce your environmental impact. We call on all elected officials to immediately advance the policy changes that will once again make Canada a world leader - to create a country, an economy and a global community that is sustainable for future generations.

MY INTERVIEW WITH UNICEF !
Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

An interview with social action website member, Yassir El Ouarzadi
Yassir El Ouarzadi, 17, is an active member of the social action website TakingITGlobal (TIG). Here he talks about his work on the website, as well as the importance of media for young people today.

Q. What has it meant for you to be an active member of TIG?
As an active member of TIG, I consider it a wonderful community that connects youth around the world and helps them find inspiration, information and get involved in improving their local and global communities. TakingItGlobal reflects how the Internet is so powerful.

Being an active member of TIG means for me that I am in the right place to realize my ambitions and influence positively people around me, especially young people. I try to raise awareness of topics that I consider crucial – like education, fighting poverty and climate change – and maybe that way, help motivate people into making a positive change in the community.

Q. How do you see the role of new media for social change?
I firmly believe that mass media must be considered and used as a tool of education. In that way, new media can play an important role in our society. Media can help young people communicate their messages and ideas by creating a global community where youth can express themselves and create opportunities where they start working towards a better world. TIG reflects very well this spirit.

Q. Why do you think it's important for young people to create media?
Nowadays, I think it is very important for young people to create media – online projects, for example – since this is the avenue through which society in general can know and satisfy their needs and help them realize their objectives. Media is significant because it reflects what society thinks of itself and this is where influence of the masses becomes truly powerful.

Q. What kind of tools do you think are most useful?
I believe that the most important tools are Internet and TV programs, since we live now in a world where technology is growing at an outstanding rate. That reality must be used in the right way – by educating people and sensibilizing them about global issues like poverty, education and climate change in order to ensure a better future, or at least the same for our children.

Q. What kind of media do you think most youth are exposed to today?
Youth are being exposed mostly to TV and Internet. That fact is a double-edged weapon because it has its advantages and a number of inconveniences too. To focus on the advantages, I think that media can empower young people by creating dialogue and debate on issues affecting youth and society in general. This will create opportunities for solutions to the main problems that are facing young people today – especially ensuring primary education for children and fighting poverty, as well as decreasing the bad effects of global warming.

Q. What issues do you feel passionate about? Tell us about your dreams.
I am passionate about science, sport, leadership, poetry, literature and other enriching activities. I like to get involved and therefore to make a positive change in society. I believe that youth must realize they are global citizens. I firmly believe that youth as a collective force have the ability to make great positive changes in our society and in the world in general.

Through the TIG networking platform, Yassir started an online education project that promotes poetry as a useful tool for people – helping them learn to communicate their ideas and visions, and improve their writing skills. Yassir would like to become cardiologist and, one day, become involved with Doctors Without Borders.
